Arthur Secunda Personal sketchbook 1948-49

The 1948-49 personal sketchbook I discovered in June, 2010 in a beaten-up file box containing some old European love letters, passports and my student permit dated 1948, was in a shabby state and in poor but restorable condition. So I decided to enhance the 20 or so images electronically for reproduction and, after reading the few decipherable notes on verso of certain sketches, figured that the memories buried in this sketchbook should be shared. They are the opposite of gravitas, full of humor and personal honesty.

The cover of this weather worn spiral bound French book, bought at the artist’s Montparnasse section of Paris, is titled “Esquisse”, translated to mean “sketch. Though it has admittedly seen many better days, it is still full of character and could pass for an abstract painting of the 60s. Here is what it looks like as hangs loosely and falls from the rest of the colored pages in the 3 x 6 inch book. In a sense, it has all the events of the last 60 years memorialized in its stains, wrinkles and thumb prints.
